Honoring Old Glory – The Meaning Behind Flag Day
Share
On June 14th, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a resolution that would change the face of a nation:
“Resolved, That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field...”
From that moment on, the American flag—our Stars and Stripes—became more than fabric. It became a symbol of freedom, sacrifice, and the unshakable spirit of the American people.
Why We Celebrate Flag Day
Flag Day isn’t just about waving a flag—it’s about honoring what it represents.
Every star stands for a state. Every stripe, for the original 13 colonies. But together, the red, white, and blue stand for unity, resilience, and freedom.
We’ve carried this flag through war zones and flown it after triumphs. It’s been stitched into the uniforms of patriots and draped over the caskets of heroes. It’s the first thing we salute in the morning and the last thing lowered at night.
How the Flag Evolved
When the flag was first adopted, it had 13 stars to represent the original colonies. As the nation grew, so did the flag. With each new state added to the Union, a new star was sewn into the blue field.
-In 1795, after Kentucky and Vermont joined, the flag had 15 stars.
-By 1818, Congress passed a law mandating the flag would always have 13 stripes, but the number of stars would grow with each state—added on July 4th following a state’s admission.
-Today, our flag proudly displays 50 stars, representing all 50 states united under one banner.
Every version of the flag tells a story of growth, progress, and perseverance. It’s a visual reminder of how far we’ve come—and what we stand for.
